Vacation Highlights: Day 1

The weekend is here and I survived my first week back after a wonderful vacation.  As promised, I thought I'd post some of the highlights from my first trip to Western Canada.

It all began on Friday, July 5th.  I got home from work, finished packing and then hubby and I loaded the kids into the car to drop them off at my parents for the week.  We were staying at a hotel close to the airport since our flight was early Saturday morning.  On the way to the hotel, we stopped at an old stomping ground, Sonny's, for a burger and fries.

You'll notice my hubby does not take selfies well...this is a common theme over the entire vacation.

On Saturday morning, we woke early to get to our flight, only to hurry up and wait as it ended up being delayed; but, we weren't notified until AFTER we got to the airport.  Luckily, my hubby has lounge access because of he travels so much and has "status".  We had a light breakfast before finally boarding the flight to Calgary.

Once we finally arrived, I started to realize that the city of Calgary takes Stampede very seriously.  Even the airport was all decked out to show their Stampede spirit.

We got our rental, a fun Jeep Wrangler, and set out to explore.  We drove to Cochrane where hubby went to get a much needed haircut and I admired the views as the mountains were starting to come into range.

From Cochrane, we set off for our first hotel of the trip, the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.  The drive was absolutely spectacular and I'm glad hubby was driving so I could admire the beauty and take lots of pictures!  Heading along the mountain roads, wildlife abounds, and we saw our first mountain goat on our way to the hotel.

The hotel was absolutely remarkable.  We were surrounded by the mountains.

After some exploration, we went back in to get some dinner at the hotel and afterwards, enjoyed a bonfire complete with camp songs and s'mores!

I was quite surprised at how late it stayed light outside.  It was close to 11pm before the sun began to set.  Despite the time change and early start to the day, we were able to stay awake to participate in the bonfire and close a wonderful first day of vacation!

If you enjoyed my Day 1 highlights, be sure to check back for Day 2, coming soon.
